Susanne Chess has a new business model all sewn up with Fine Fabrics of Santa Barbara. The specialty fabric shop opened [in 2004].... she... keeps the inventory, which includes the likes of Carolina Herrera, Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Nicole Miller and Donna Karan, changing on a weekly basis....
To keep her inventory current, Chess travels to trade shows and works with a fabric buyer... “who’s connected to designers like Oscar de la Renta and Chanel,” she said. In making her selections she visualized, “how the fabric will look as a garment and whether it’s something worn in Santa Barbara” she continued. “I’ve lived her for 30 years and I know the lifestyle. I’m also looking for quality, a cut above what you’ll find in ready-made stores.”
As the name implies, Fine Fabrics of Santa Barbara offers fine fabric such as Soltiss-Bucol’s $879 per yard French beaded lace.
“It’s a fashion fabric store, “Chess continued. “Although there could be some crossover into home décor. But fashion fabric is what I know....
Hoping to serve as an inspiration and even a muse to budding fashion designers and amateur sewers, Chess has made part of her shop into a classroom, complete with Bernina sewing machines provided by Grant House. “Its kind of an Internet café for sewing,” she quipped. Customers can browse the pattern books and select projects, choose fabrics and actually do the sewing at Fine Fabric. Chess and her sewing savvy staff are on hand to guide them through every step of the process from laying out the pattern and cutting the fabric to sewing the button holes and adding zippers.... more at South Coast Beacon
